Gau Daan

Gau Daan—the donation of a cow—is a deeply revered ritual in Hinduism, especially performed after someone’s passing to aid the soul of the deceased in achieving Moksha, or liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The cow, seen as sacred and connected to divinity, plays a central role in this ritual due to its spiritual importance in providing sustenance, purity, and sacredness.

It is said to purify the soul and help remove karmic debts accumulated during one’s lifetime, granting them peace in the afterlife. ✦ Safe Passage and Protection in the Afterlife: According to Hindu belief, the soul of the deceased must cross the Vaitarni River, which flows in the realm of the dead. This journey is essential for reaching Moksha, and the cow is believed to guide the soul safely across this river. By holding onto the cow’s tail, the soul is protected from suffering in the afterlife, securing its journey towards spiritual freedom.
