Anna Daan

Since the Rigvedic period, the importance of food has been emphasised in various ways. The Rigveda highlights the significance of Anna Daan (food donation) and praises those who provide nourishment to others. One such verse, found in Chapter 10, Verse 117, extols the greatness of food and the selfless act of giving:

✦ Verse (Rigveda 10.117.3): Sa idbhojo yo grihave dadaatyannakamay charate krushaya. aramasmai bhavati yamahut utaparishu krunute sakhayam॥

✦ Meaning: “He who offers food to the weak and needy is a true donor. Not only does he receive the complete rewards of his sacrifices, but even his enemies become his friends, for the donor is a friend to all.”

✦ Sacred Chants offers you the opportunity to perform Anna Daan through charitable organisations, with receipts of your donations provided for your records. By donating specific amounts, usually a quintal of grains, on behalf of yourself or your loved ones, you can offer sustenance to the poor and needy.

Ann Daan Fulfilling Religious Duties and Invoking Prosperity

✦ Attaining Spiritual Merit (Punya): Donating food is considered one of the highest forms of charity in Hindu tradition. It is believed to accrue immense spiritual merit and good karma, cleansing the donor of sins and bringing them closer to Moksha (liberation), as described in the Manusmriti (Manusmriti, Chapter 4, Verse 229).

✦ Divine Blessings and Prosperity: Anna Daan is thought to invoke the blessings of various deities, particularly Annapurna Devi, the goddess of nourishment. Her blessings are believed to bring prosperity, health, and happiness to the donor and their family, as mentioned in the(Shiva Purana, Kotirudra Samhita, Chapter 19).

✦ Fulfilling Religious Duties: Providing food to those in need is seen as a vital expression of one's religious and moral duties (dharma). It is an integral part of many Hindu rituals and festivals, symbolizing compassion and selflessness, as highlighted in the Bhagavad Gita(Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 3, Verse 13).
